My husband and I booked a room during our vacation.

It turned out we had been sharing our “perfect” vacation room with a mud dauber wasp nest. That odd little column, carefully built from mud, was actually a tiny fortress—inside, a larva quietly developing, surrounded by paralyzed spiders the wasp had hunted and stored as food. Once we knew, the whole room felt different, as if a hidden world had been living right beside us the entire time.

We called the front desk, half-embarrassed, half-freaked out. Staff arrived, confirmed our discovery, and safely removed the nest. No drama, no swarm, no sting—just a quiet end to our brief horror story. But the image stayed with me: how something so unsettling, so mysterious at first glance, was simply nature doing what it always does, even on the polished walls of a vacation hotel.
