Inheritance Changed Everything

I walked into that conversation ready for war and found something far more disarming: my father, suddenly small in his own kitchen, admitting he’d been terrified of dying alone. He hadn’t meant to erase me; he’d just been so desperate to feel young and chosen again that he’d ignored how it looked from my side—like I was being edited out of my own family story.

Liv’s confession landed just as hard. She’d read my distance as disgust, assumed I wanted a clean break from the man who’d failed me in quieter ways long before she arrived. Hearing that stung, but it also made sense. We had all been guessing, punishing each other for stories we’d written in our own heads. The will can be changed with a lawyer and a form. The harder work is this: three people, sitting in the wreckage, choosing to rewrite themselves instead.
