Ebola symptoms and how it spreads as officials confirm 131 dead in outbreak

In eastern DR Congo, grief and fear hang in the air. Families in Ituri and surrounding provinces bury their dead under the shadow of a virus they can’t see, only feel. People speak of “great suffering” as neighbors vanish into isolation wards, while rumors spread faster than the truth. Health workers, wrapped in protective suits, move from village to village, tracing contacts, begging communities to report symptoms early and avoid traditional burial practices that can fuel infection.

Ebola begins like so many other illnesses: fever, headache, aching joints, crushing fatigue, a sore throat that feels harmless at first. Then, for many, comes the terrifying turn—relentless vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, bleeding that cannot be explained. Survivors often carry scars you can’t see: vision damage, chronic pain, depression, memories they wish they could erase. Awareness, early treatment, and honest information remain the thin line between containment and catastrophe.
